Satellite communication like the global positioning system (GPS) is widely used for the smooth operation of transport networks like those in moving companies. It makes moving and transport companies more efficient and effective in delivering quality service to their clients.

GPS is specifically powerful in vehicle tracking systems and vehicle navigation systems. The former is commonly applied in management of fleet of vehicles. Each car or truck is fitted with GPS device that transmits the vehicle's positional data to a central or monitoring station. The vehicle tracking system is useful for a moving company who wish to know the progress of the transport service they provide. The company has an option to allow clients to see the progress report, as well. If the truck strays from its course, the monitoring station can contact it through wireless phone service or cellular phone network and instruct it to get back on track or inquire what had happened. On the other hand, the vehicle navigation system is effective in guiding vehicles towards their destination. It commonly uses GPS, inertial navigation system, or a combination of both to identify the current position of the vehicle and the best route it can take. Before the driver starts his journey, he provides the details of his destination to a computer connected to a navigational system. The computer then guides the driver by providing instructions in audio, video, or a combination of both formats. The merit of using a combination of GPS and inertial navigation system is that the navigation continues even if the GPS signal is obstructed. With a vehicle navigation system, the driver gets to follow an optimised route.
